Restricting Junk Foods Might Not Help Your Weight

junk foodsAccording to a recent study done in the United States, “reducing people’s option for junk foods helps them to cut back on the amount of calories they take in, but it doesn’t reduce their overall calorie load or help them lose weight,” says the article in Reuters.

Before you think that this article is going to tell you that you can just run out and indulge in your favorite fast food joint, it is important to see why restricting your junk food options is not the best way to lose weight.

Why Does Reducing Junk Food Not Work?

Hollie Raynor, a professor at the University of Tennessee said that “limiting variety was helpful for reducing intake for that type of food group, but it appeared that compensation occurred in other parts of the diet.”

This means that when people feel good about themselves for making one healthy decision, they often reward themselves in other areas. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition warns dieters who are restricting their food variety – like cutting out carbs or fats – may be crippling themselves for weight loss success.

In the study, participants were asked to limit their sources of “junk food,” or food that is rich in calories but not a very good source of essential nutrients, in the hopes that monotony of one or two options would reduce the appeal of the junk food.

However, the results of the study showed that while the participants who restricted their junk food did eat fewer calories from junk food, they made up for it with larger portions in other areas such as entrees.

Limit Your Calories for the Whole Day

Rather than simply feeling good about your decisions for one meal, it is important to keep your entire day’s worth of calories in perspective. If you eat more at breakfast than you should have, cut back on lunch. If you know you want to eat a delicious dessert tonight, eat a smaller dinner.

If you find that you are snacking throughout the day, it might be that you have trained your appetite to be bigger than you can manage. To help rein your cravings back in, many people have found that weight loss supplements that contain appetite suppressants are an effective way to eat less without really thinking about it.

At Weightlosspills.net you will find reviews, articles and tips from the experts that will help you find an appetite suppressant that is right for your unique needs.

An Unhealthy Appetite Can Mean an Unhealthy Life

For many people, a strong appetite can be a symptom of underlying health or emotional issues. It can be as simple as dehydration, or as serious as depression. By drinking water often, getting enough sleep and exercising regularly, you can eliminate some of the most common reasons for an uncontrollable appetite.

However, if you find that you are using food as an escape valve or physical/emotional/mental stress in your life, you should be aware that you could have an unhealthy relationship with food. There are many psychiatrists and counselors that are uniquely trained to help people stop using food as a crutch and to eat for their bodies, rather than against them.
